Yahoo revealed today a new set of updates for its Map solution, aiming to make the product more competitive for the Mountain View rival Google. As part of the update, the giant portal included driving directions for no more than 34 European countries, a function that was implemented in Google Maps a long time ago. According to Bigmouthmedia News, Yahoo wants even more and prepares a new pack of improvements that will bring numerous other landmarks and enhanced information concerning the locations displayed by the service. "Yahoo! is aiming to do this by featuring more landmarks and visual clues in directions in order for people to find their way around lesser known areas," the publication reported.

In the recent period, Yahoo Maps was quite an anonymous product because Google managed to lure all the users with its top products, Google Maps and Google Earth. However, Yahoo Maps is also a well-developed solution that can provide an impressive amount of information able to challenge the other rivals. "Yahoo! is rolling out their maps service all over the world, having most recently updated Yahoo! Maps India, in order to gain back market share that has been lost to AOL's MapQuest service and Google Maps," Bigmouthmedia News added.

A few days ago, Google proved that it owns the most powerful products in this category and quietly debuted a new version of Google Earth, a downloadable application that can provide almost the same features as Yahoo Maps but straight on a computer's desktop. Anyway, Google Earth is often regarded as more than a simple downloadable tool because it is used with a lot of other goals than the one presented by the Mountain View company. For example, the researchers are using the Google product to monitor the volcanic activity and to discover the latest activity in certain areas.
