Apple has posted updates for users of its high-performance SAN file system for Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server. Xsan enables users to share one or more RAID devices with multiple servers or workstations, allowing computers to read and write to the same storage volume at the same time, having the Xsan file system installed.

According to the Cupertino-based company behind the Mac operating system, Xsan includes all the software needed for a complete SAN solution. This includes the metadata controller software, the file system client software and integrated setup and management, as well as monitoring tools.

“Share terabytes of data over an ultrafast Fibre Channel network with Xsan 2,” Apple says. “This easy-to-use, enterprise-class, high-performance storage area network (SAN) file system for Mac OS X enables you to share one or more RAID devices with multiple servers or workstations. Combining enhanced performance with Apple’s legendary ease of use, Xsan 2 makes it easier for first-time users to quickly set up and deploy a SAN. It also introduces MultiSAN, which allows users on a single workstation to access multiple SANs at the same time,” the company reveals in a Support note on its website. “Xsan 2 is fully integrated with Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server and is qualified to work with third-party RAID storage hardware,” the Mac maker concludes.

The Xsan 2.2 Admin Update for OS X 10.6 and 10.5 includes general administration fixes for remotely administering, configuring and maintaining Xsan deployments, as well as specific fixes for:

- using SAN Setup Assistant to configure volumes, LUNs and affinities; - changing a computer between client and metadata controller roles; - listing computers connected to the SAN; - visually displaying when LUNs have been truncated.

As for the Xsan 2.2 FileSystem Update for 10.6 and 10.5, it includes general file system fixes, as well as specific fixes for 64-bit support on Snow Leopard versions of Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server; using native extended attributes; file system performance and reliability, and volume reliability during metadata controller failover scenarios.
