Chinese mobile phone maker Xiaomi has been long rumored to plan on bringing to the market a new device in the already popular Redmi series of smartphones, and the company has confirmed over the weekend the upcoming availability of this handset, which will be called Redmi Note.

Just as previously rumored, the mobile phone will be released with a 5.5-inch touchscreen display capable of delivering a 720p resolution, which should make it a great option for those looking to grab a cheap handset with a large screen.

However, the new phone will also be able to deliver when it comes to performance, as Xiaomi has packed it with an octa-core processor inside.

Previous rumors suggested that the company might actually launch the device in two flavors, one with a 1.4GHz CPU and the other with a 1.7GHz processor, yet no official confirmation on the matter has been provided as of now.

The rest of the smartphone’s hardware specifications are still shrouded in mystery, through the device was said before to arrive with support for 4G LTE networks, courtesy of its powerful processor.

Moreover, it might hit shelves with a 13-megapixel camera on the back, supposedly capable of offering full HD video recording, as well as with a 5MP front camera for making video calls while on the go.

The company has yet to deliver all the necessary info on these specs and features, though chances are that the rumors will actually pan out in the end. No details on the Android version loaded on top of Redmi Note have been offered either.

Furthermore, Xiaomi was tight-lipped on the pricing of the new mobile phone as well, and it remains to be seen whether it will launch it with a cost similar to that of its predecessors or not.

In fact, the Chinese mobile phone maker has announced that it will offer 50 Redmi Note devices to those who guess the handset’s price tag.

According to Engadget, we might see the phone priced anywhere between 699 Yuan ($113/€82) and 1,499 Yuan ($243/€175), which represent the amounts that users need to pay to grab the original Xiaomi Redmi or the Xiaomi MI2a, respectively.

Moreover, the news site suggests that the handset vendor might actually release the new smartphone at a cost sitting right between the two, which would be of around 999 Yuan ($162/€116).

It should not be too long before specific details on this are provided, as Xiaomi has already confirmed that the new Redmi Note will be put up for reservation on March 19, exclusively through Tencent's Qzone app.
