Apple has released the fifth preview version of Xcode 4 to enrolled iOS developers. Available as a free download from the iOS Dev Center, Xcode 4 is a major new release of Xcode for both Mac and iOS development which includes the iOS SDK 4.2 GM seed.

A complete, full-featured IDE built around a smooth workflow, Xcode integrates the editing of source code, with the build and compile steps, through to a graphical debugging experience.

Developers can carry out these tasks without ever leaving the view of their source code.

Xcode can now manage all of a developer’s testing devices, automatically packaging iPhone apps with the proper certificates, and installing apps on the iPhone itself, thanks to the advent of the iOS SDK.

The remote debugger manages breakpoints when the app is controlled on the device, as it connects to the device in real-time.

“This is a pre-release version of Xcode 4, a major new release of Xcode for both Mac and iOS development,” the company states on the Developer-focused section of Apple.com.

“This release requires Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, and includes the iOS SDK 4.2 GM seed, to develop apps for Mac, iPhone, and iPad,” it adds.

The latest version of the software brings new features for tabs, editor panes and alerts, according to Apple.

“This preview introduces new features and enhancements for tabs, editor panes, and alerts. These features are designed to scale the single window interface of Xcode 4 to more effectively use available screen real estate, from the 11” MacBook Air, up to Macs equipped with multiple monitors,” Apple explains.

According to Macstories.net, the company further asks developers to “experiment with these new features to see how Xcode 4 can speed up your daily development tasks.”
