14 DAY TRIAL // Yet another report concerning the Xbox 720 has appeared on the web, this time with details about the next-generation console but also with new info on the rumored redesigned Xbox 360 console, which can apparently be connected to the new one in order to provide backwards compatibility.
Details about the Xbox 720 have been leaked several times in recent months, despite the fact that Microsoft isn't commenting on the different rumors.
Now, VGLeaks has posted a brand new report concerning the Xbox 720, aka Durango, but also fresh details on the recently rumored Xbox 360 console redesign, which will be marketed as a set-top box and a backwards compatibility peripheral for the next-gen device.
More specifically, it seems that Microsoft wants to expand the Xbox brand with two new devices this fall.
The first is the Xbox 720, aka Durango, which will be a next-generation console capable of playing only games made for it, as it doesn't have backwards compatibility with the Xbox 360.
While the new device shines when it's connected to the internet, it will allow users to play games stored on the hard drive or on retail discs without a working connection, meaning used gaming is still possible on the console.
In order to offer backwards compatibility and attack a new segment of the market, Microsoft is also getting ready to debut a redesigned Xbox 360 that's smaller in size and doesn't feature a disc drive.
Instead, the device will be sold as an augmented set-top box designed to consume entertainment and play downloaded games. This device will require a constant internet connection to work as intended, although it's unclear if downloaded games can be played offline.
The two new devices can be connected to each other so that the smaller console provides the backwards compatibility feature to the Xbox 720. Owners can insert an Xbox 360 game disc into the new device and have the actual work done by the attached system.
Considering Microsoft still isn't commenting on the reports, look forward to hearing more in late May, when the company is expected to present the new consoles to the world.
