The next-generation Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4 home consoles might be revealed next year, at least according to two new reports that cite inside sources from both Microsoft and Sony, respectively.

The next generation of video game consoles has been speculated on for quite some time, but recent reports have really kicked things into overdrive, as various websites claim that both Microsoft and Sony will be announcing their new Xbox and PlayStation devices, respectively, next year.

First up, we have BGR, which cites a source with knowledge from Microsoft's research and development division, who claims that the next Xbox console, probably called the Xbox 720, will be revealed at next year's E3 conference.

This was also rumored a few weeks ago, when another website claimed that Microsoft, together with Crysis developer Crytek, were already working on games to be demoed on the next Xbox console, report which was denied by the German developer.

What's more, Industry Gamers arrives with another rumor, this time in regards to the next PlayStation console, the PlayStation 4, which it says might also be revealed to the world next year.

The website claims that, according to a source from a respected developer, Sony has informed its partners that a PlayStation 4 announcement was coming sometime in 2012, probably at the E3 conference, in order to stay hot on the heels of its rival, Microsoft.

Bear in mind that these two reports are shaky, to say the least, and both Microsoft and Sony revealed in these past weeks that their devices are reaching the halfway point of their lifecycles, so they still have plenty of years ahead of them.

These statements, however, don't deny that their successors might be announced early, and will sell side by side with the current devices, just how the PlayStation 3 is being marketed primarily, while the PlayStation 2 is still being sold and is making a nice profit for Sony.
