Unclear whether BioWare and Microsoft can solve the problem

One of the big features of the Mass Effect series has been the continuity that is built in it via the saved games that were transferred from title to title. But it seems that some players might have a problem with the now-launched Mass Effect 3 because the Xbox 360 version of the game has issues with saves that are delivered via the cloud.

An official post from Electronic Arts says, “We are currently aware of an issue that may prevent Xbox 360 users from importing their completed Mass Effect 2 save game files into Mass Effect 3.”

It adds, “While Mass Effect 3 supports cloud saving for new or successfully imported Mass Effect 2 saves, it does not support the importation of endgame saves directly from the cloud. Additionally, this can cause it to not recognize save files that have been transferred via cloud to a console other than the one where they originated.”

It is not clear whether BioWare and Electronic Arts are working on a fix for the issue of cloud saved games or players will need to always make sure that they have their saves on the local hard drive before starting up a new playthrough.

The saved games for the first two Mass Effect titles allowed for so many options and variations that sites popped up acted as repositories and allowed players to cherry pick the options they were interested in before downloading a character and playing his story.

The third game in the series is designed to tie up all the loose ends from previous titles in the series and that means that the experience of those who have used the same character from the first game will be more personal than for those players who are starting Mass Effect 3 from scratch.

The BioWare game can be played on the PC, the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 and European gamers will get it on Friday.
