1GB inbox

Yesterday, Yahoo announced its intention to increase once again the storage capacity of the email accounts associated with the free web mail service.

This new modification will be applied starting with the end of next month, when Yahoo Mail users will discover that suddenly their storage capacity quadruples. So, with one move and without too much commotion, Yahoo is able to provide a competitive service, comparable from all points of view with the much anticipated, much tested, overly exclusivist Gmail, which after more than one year is still at the beta version.

Hotmail didn't do too well in keeping their credibility over a web mail service that not long ago only offered 2 MB of storage space.

And even after the miracle happened and they increased the Inbox size to 250 MB, the implementing process lasted more than it was anticipated.

Even though in the United States the users took advantage of the storing space via MSN, in some areas from Europe, users waited long and hard before the promises materialized. Yahoo promises that this will not happen with their leap from 250 MB to 1 Gb, as it didn't happen last summer when their storing capacity grew overnight from 4/6 MB to their actual size.

Although, considering the general opinion of Internet surfers, Yahoo's initiative is shaping as a direct challenge to Google's Gmail, Brad Garlinghouse, the vice-president of the communication department within Yahoo, declared that this was not the intention behind the major changes for such a great number of users. Actually, Yahoo suddenly realized the users' true needs and what is considered sufficient space for a web mail service.

Along with the increased storing space, Yahoo will offer antivirus scanning solutions. Instead of scanning and disinfecting the file, Norton Antivirus supplied by Symantec will forbid the launching of the file.
