General purpose GPU solution have gained quite a bit of ground in the high performance computing market as numerous companies have started developing such solutions, and XCT is the latest outfit to join them with their recently announced XtremeReality Platform that can pack up to eight Nvidia Tesla GPUs.

The machine is available in two versions, one featuring a desktop case while the other uses a rackable chassis, but both solutions share the same hardware configuration.

This means that the systems can pack dual Intel Xeon 5600-series processors, that are clocked as high as 3.33GHz and feature six processing cores and 12MB of shared Level 3 cache memory, up to eight Nvidia Quadro or Tesla graphics cards, a maximum of 144GB of DDR3 memory and a pair of 2.5-inch physical hard drives or SSDs.

Customers can opt for Tesla C2070 or C2050 GPGPUs and both solutions features 448 CUDA cores clocked at 1.15GHz, that can deliver a maximum theoretical double precision floating point performance of 515 Gflops.

The only difference between the two Tesla GPUs is the amount of memory installed as the C2070 features 6GB of GDDR5 video buffer while the C2050 has to make do with “only” 3GB.

“We started out with a blank slate in the deign of the XR-P. Drawing on our and our partner's heritage and years of experience in the HPC arena,” states Jeff Fettig, VP, Marketing and Business Development, XCT.

“Our goal was to create a solution that could be deployed against the numerous challenges facing the HPC user be they scientific, quantitative or visual in nature. One primary goal was to create a platform that was capable of seamlessly fitting into the paradigm of shared on-demand Cloud Infrastructure.

“We believe we have met and exceeded these goals. We are currently working on several Private Cloud Infrastructure projects that are nearing deployment," concluded the company's rep.

No pricing or availability details were made public, but XCT will showcase the systems at the upcoming 2011 High Performance Computing Linux Financial Markets show on April 4th in New York City.
