X-Com was one of the most interesting gaming experiences of the '90's and it was expected that fans of the old game would be pretty hard on any project that aims to revive the franchise while changing some of the defining aspects that made it so interesting.

The new XCOM project managed to annoy quite a lot of fans with its move to the first person shooter genre but one of the men leading the development seems to think the decision was the right one to make and will actually lead to the new title having a much wider audience.

Jonathan Pelling, who is the creative director working on the new XCOM project, told VG247 as part of a bigger interview that “I sort of count myself as one of its biggest fans, so I guess I can understand why people might not think that a first-person shooter is a great idea. But I think it actually is a great idea.”

He went on to point out the essence of the experience for him and how the new game keeps it, adding “It’s a game where you’re in charge. You’re gonna make decisions. You’re gonna go out into the field and face really deadly enemies. You can never expect where it’s gonna come from, or what it’s gonna do next.”

Peeling is adamant that the team is not interested in changing the entire way XCOM is played. The first person genre is very popular at the moment and will guarantee a bigger number of players will be exposed to what they are creating, especially since modernity has pretty much abandoned the turn based tactics segment.

Currently, Take Two’s XCOM is being developed for the Xbox 360 home console from Microsoft and for the PC, with the launch date set for 2011, probably somewhere in the second half.
