On June 16, Adam Jackson had the great pleasure of announcing the immediate availability for download of the second maintenance release of the X.Org Server 1.17 display server for GNU/Linux and UNIX-like operating systems.

X.Org Server 1.17.2 is a massive update, and the changelog, which has been attached at the end of the article for reference, is overwhelming. Highlights of this release include an important security fix for XWayland, better compatibility with the GCC 5 compiler, fb setup improvements for big-endian processors, int10 setup fixes for VESA, and a patch for a regression in the server-interpreted's authentication.

Furthermore, we can notice the addition of GPU screens for xfree86, despite the fact that there are no active GDevs, support for x86_64 (64-bit) and i*86 (32-bit) for $host_cpu in Solaris systems running on x86 hardware, multiple Xephyr improvements, smooth scrolling implementation in XWayland, and removal of chatty error messages from randr.

Additionally, there are fixes for issues with software cursor fallback in modesetting, a use-after-free in ShmDestroyPixmap, xf86_check_platform_slot's handling of PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) in xfree86, build issues for MinGW, compilation problems when DRI3 is not defined, word cast to a pointer, error strings in XWayland, and image byte order on big endian hardware.

There are numerous other fixes for XWayland, systemd-logind, and Glamor

Among other noteworthy changes brought by X.Org Server 1.17.2, we can mention an xselinux resource initialization fix for xinerama pixmaps, several WIN32 fixes, a workaround for a segfault caused by 'DISPLAY= Xephy -glamor,' usage of the GL_FRAMEBUFFER OpenGL extension instead of GL_READ_FRAMEBUFFER in Glamor, and multiple systemd-logind fixes.

As mentioned, the changelog for X.Org Server 1.17.2 is overwhelming, so if you want to know what exactly has been removed, fixed, or added in this release, please read the entire release notes posted at the end of the article. In the meantime, you can download X.Org Server 1.17.2 right now from Softpedia or check the main software repositories of your distribution for an update.
