Second installment in the rebooted franchise arrives in theaters on May 23

May 23, 2014 surely can’t come quickly enough: in anticipation of the release of the second installment in the rebooted “X-Men” franchise, a new trailer has dropped and it’s everything fans could have hoped for, and possibly a bit more too.

“X-Men: Days of Future Past” includes key players from both the rebooted and the original franchise, which means that even listing the name of the actors making a cameo in it is quite a feat.

James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sir Ian McKellen, Sir Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Ellen Page, Peter Dinklage, and Evan Peter, all get screentime in the Bryan Singer-directed film, based on a storyline that first appeared in “Uncanny X-Men” in 1981.

Fans will catch up with their favorite mutants, both a younger and an older version of each, as the story switches from present to past and back again.

As the trailer above explains it, in the present, the mutants are being hunted down by the Sentinels so Wolverine must go back in time to make things right again. We’ll see if his mission is successful on May 23 but, oh my god, James McAvoy cries and it breaks my heart.

Check it out.
