Since it is just a matter of time before the BDXL format becomes more accessible to the masses, Pioneer figured it would speed things up by a tiny bit by bringing out what it calls the first Blu-ray writer that can scribe onto them (though Buffalo might disagree).

For those that do not remember or have not yet learned, BDXL is the latest Blu-ray disk format that the Blu-ray Disk Association came up with.

Revealed some months ago, it describes the making of disks with capacities of 100 GB and even 128 GB.

The only 'problem' with these new disks is that existing Blu-ray devices are not compatible with them, meaning that companies had to start new product lines with drives that can read and write them.

Pioneer figured the new year was an opportune moment for its own drive to come forth, so it issued a press release to announce that the BDR-206MBK is now available.

“The availability of the BDXL format is a very exciting development in the progression of Blu-ray,” says Ken Usui, CSV IT Peripheral Sales manager from Pioneer Corporation.

“The massive storage capabilities, in a removable format, provide consumers and professionals alike with a fast and convenient way to transport and archive their digital data including image, film and music libraries,” usui added.

“We have also built a range of technologies into the product that ensure high-quality recording. We are very confident that this product will encourage consumers to use Blu-ray for their archiving needs,” he went on to saying.

Pioneer implemented the Limit Equalizer technology, which purifies unclear signals generated when reading data.

There us also a Disc vibration Resonance Stabilizer, which boosts precision while the disk is spinning at high speeds.

PowerRead deals with scratched and stained disks, while the airtight design prevents dust ingress and reduces operating noise.

Pioneer and its OEMs should start selling in January, 2011, though the price was not mentioned.
