The Weinstein Company to produce three new films based on the 1996 hit

Earlier last month, reports came swirling in that a forth “Scream” movie was in the making at Dimension Films, although no specifics were offered at the time. Now, it seems that a possible reboot of the franchise is currently underway, with original writer Kevin Williamson at the helm, according to a leaked e-mail that has ended up at RopesOfSilicon.

“RopesOfSilicon received an anonymous e-mail which contained a screenshot from the William Morris Agency Intranet (basically, the internal Internet of Hollywood’s top talent agency). The screenshot shows a company e-mail announcing that original ‘Scream’ scribe Kevin Williamson has signed on to script a new trilogy of ‘Scream’ films for The Weinstein Co.” SlashFilm is reporting.

Nevertheless, it should be noted that a huge question mark accompanies said e-mail as to its authenticity. Then, there is also the issue of why The Weinstein Company agrees to do no less than three different films, what with the economical downturn, which is also seriously affecting ticket sales. On the other hand, movie-oriented publications are pointing out, horror movies have always been a huge hit with the audiences, and a classic such as “Scream” would probably fare extremely well at the box-office.

As for the direction that the new three “Scream” movies would take, this is yet to be established. Williamson would most likely try to reboot the franchise instead of writing another sequel, it is being said, especially in the context in which the third film was received with only lukewarm reviews by the fans. A reboot would do for “Scream” what “Batman Begins” did for the story of the caped crusader, so it would be most likely successful, and a good investment as well.

In January, reports had it that Dimension was thinking of making a fourth “Scream,” putting in considerable efforts to bringing the original cast together on the same set again. “They are making financial offers to David Arquette, Courtney Cox Arquette and Neve Campbell to play cameos. [Kevin Williamson] is going to start writing a draft, although it may or may not become the shooting script (which is typical).” BloodyDisgusting was revealing at the time.
