PhatWare Corporation has launched the first public beta version of the WritePad handwriting-recognition Software Development Kit (SDK) for the Android operating system. The announcement follows the recent release of the product for the iPhone and iPad platforms.

"After PhatWare announced last month the availability of WritePad SDK for iPhone and iPad, we’ve been receiving numerous requests from developers to support other platforms," Stan Miasnikov, president of PhatWare Corporation, said. "Today we are pleased to announce that the first beta of the WritePad SDK for Android OS is now available for evaluation and licensing."

The WritePad SDK is a multi-platform handwriting recognition technology that enables handwriting input in third-party applications running on devices powered by Android OS 1.6 or later. Supported languages include English, German, French, and Spanish, with more to be available in the near future.

Some of the main features of the WritePad SDK include the ability to recognize a variety of handwritten styles, such as cursive (script), PRINT and MIXed; the capacity to identify both words from its main or user-defined dictionary, as well as special ones such as names, numbers and mixed alphanumeric combinations; and the automatic recognition of spacing between words in a text. The SDK allows one to achieve a high accuracy without requiring prior training from the user.

The WritePad Software Development Kit includes static libraries and dictionaries for the aforementioned languages, header files with definition of API calls and structures, documentation, the source code for JNI wrapper compatible with Android OS, and sample code in Java that demonstrates how to use the WritePad API. Developers who want to try out the SDK can request an evaluation version on PhatWare's website. Besides Android, the WritePad SDK is also available for licensing by software developers and OEMs on the iPhone, iPad, MAC OS X, and Linux platforms.
