Rumors related to the demise of Team 17 and its long running Worms franchise have been greatly exaggerated, it seems. The studio has just announced that the cute worms capable of wielding a large amount of weaponry are set to make an appearance on the Xbox Live Arcade service from Microsoft next Wednesday, on July 1, in a new title called Worms 2: Armageddon.

The title should be sold for 800 Microsoft Points, which is about 10 dollars when talking in real world money and the developer is also promising that it will release a PC version of the game later during 2009. The worms seem to be as combative and as bloodthirsty as ever.

Worms 2: Armageddon is set to offer a huge array of improvements when compared to the Worms game that came to XBLA sometime in 2007. Some of the new weapons that can be used in the new release are: the bunker buster, the electro magnet, the sentry gun and the Buffalo Of Lies. Team 17 is also promising fresh rope racing modes and a new type of fort combat mechanics.

Returning favorite weapons will be the Holy Hand Grenade, complete with the well-known sound effect, the various types of sheep and the concrete donkey. The game will be easier to get into and the various stages have been designed to offer more tactical possibilities for shrewd players while also allowing for quick matches in which the combatants engage each other quickly.

The arenas have also been worked on, with new settings being introduced, like Medieval England, Cheese Moon and Construction site. The developer is also talking about introducing vertical levels alongside the more horizontal-oriented ones. As always, the game sports a powerful, yet easy-to-use stage editor to keep the destruction fresh.
