IPTV has been gaining ground, and that may not have really accounted for much of the demand for normal pay-TV, but if these figures provided by ABI Research are any indication, the importance will rise quite a bit.
IPTV subscribers increased in number by 18.5% in 2013, to 92 million. Not too big a figure, all told.
Meanwhile, total pay-TV subscribers around the world were at 903.3 million.
ABI Research expects the total figure to keep growing, until it reaches 1.1 billion by 2019, 5 years from now.
IPTVs will account for 15% of that, growing to 161 million by then. FTTH subscriber base and bundled subscriber base of telcos are boosting this particular segment.
Cable TV has grown at the slowest rate, with 3% improvement, but it still makes up the majority, with 570.2 million subscribers.
