Good bye old CDs

World of Warcraft is one of the most popular games out there, with a fan base spreading from school kids to adult men or women, having over 11 million subscribers. Part of this huge popularity is that it is accessible from the weakest computer to the most high end gaming rig. It is also available on DVD and the old CD format; that made it easily installable, without forcing the user to buy a DVD player or borrow one from friends. This trend of availability continued with the first expansion of the now famous MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game), The Burning Crusade, which was launched both on DVD and CD. But that will change with the next expansion scheduled. Entitled Wrath of the Lich King, it will be made available only on DVD.

That really made people turn their heads, many wondering whether the decision would have an impact on the sales of the expansion. Even though nowadays almost every computer features a DVD player, and the price of one is pretty low, you can't help but wonder whether the people who only play WoW on their PC would consider investing in a DVD player. Another option would be for them to wait until the expansion is made available as a download, but that means that they would have to wait for a while. As an example, The Burning Crusade was released as a digital download a month after the store launch.

For those of you who don't know, World of Warcraft is one of the biggest games in the world, dominating the MMORPG market, holding over 62 % of it. Created by Blizzard, as a sequel to its hit strategy title Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, it won over loads of fans and set a world record of popularity.

I am sure that the fans' passion for the game will make them upgrade their PCs.
