Wargaming.net, the developer of World of Tanks, has announced that the World War II focused MMO has managed to attract more than 2 million players on the Russian market and has close to 1 million registrations on Western markets.

The game has long been in beta stage and has seen an official launch on April 12 in the West.

Victor Kislyi, who is the chief executive officer of Wargaming.net, stated, “At the very beginning of development for World Of Tanks, we were assuming that the maximum number would be around 600,000 players worldwide. Now, we have 2 million registrations in Russia alone, not to mention the Western audience and its immense growth.”

He added, “With the tremendous number we’ve reached in Russia as well as the dynamics of community growth in Europe and North America, we are looking forward to the many more milestones to come.”

World of Tanks is based on a free-to-play model with players able to get the game client, create an account and jump right into the action and with in-game currency allowing those willing to pay to get access to better tank crews and upgrades for their fighting vehicle.

The MMO is based around the big tank battles of World War II and is purely player versus player oriented, with players divided into teams and sent out to take each other out.

The game allows access to more than 150 armored vehicles from the big powers engaged in the war, including Germany, Russia and the United States.

There are different types of tanks, from fast and maneuverable ones to the slow but armored heavy ones, and the player needs to customize his tactics depending on his choice and the make up of his team.

The development team at Wargaming.net will continue to tweak the balance of World of Tanks and also promises new content.
