A bomb was detonated near a train station in Tokyo on Tuesday, June 4. Experts believe that the explosive has lied hidden near the station since World War II.

Authorities were called after a crew performing construction works came across the 40-centimeter (15.7-inches) long shell.

They provoked an explosion right before noon, New Tang Dynasty Television reports. The Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force placed sand bags on a perimeter of 3 meters (9.9 feet).

Traffic was stopped for commuter trains and a bullet train line, and the station was evacuated. Sellers and shoppers in a shopping gallery located next to the station were also sent away while the bomb was detonated.

Officials believe that the bomb was once attached to an Imperial Army weapon for shooting down aircrafts.
