Sylvia Browne, a world-famous psychic and best-selling author, but also a very controversial figure because of the very thing that made her famous and rich, namely her professed ability of being able to make contact with the dead, has passed away.

An announcement on her official website informs that she died at the Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, California, surrounded by her family. It does not mention a cause of death. Browne was 77 years old and is survived by her husband, two sons, three grandchildren and her sister.

“For nearly six decades, Sylvia Browne dedicated her life to helping others as a spiritual guide through private readings, past-life regressions and prayer groups that spanned the globe,” the announcement says.

Browne would often get involved in criminal cases, trying to help authorities and victims’ families find some peace in knowing whether the victims were still alive or not. She had varying results, but those times when she did fail, everyone remembered.

Some of her biggest fails are included in the second video embedded below, and were used at the time as “proof” that she was nothing but a fraud. The first one embedded in this post is a relatively recent online show Sylvia did on topics like spirituality, life after death, love and God.

Ms. Browne might have been all kinds of things, but she was always a very religious person. Many say that she was nothing but a shameless con who prayed on the weak by exploiting their darkest, most intimate fears for a profit.

She always believed in God though, and would urge others to lead a life of love in His name. Which, of course, doesn’t excuse her if she really was a con woman, but it is to her credit.

“My one prayer every morning that has carried me through my life is, ‘Hi God, it's me again.’ It doesn't matter how you pray. It can be just simply talking to God. Remember, God knows your heart and soul,” she used to say.
