WordPress developer Automattic has announced the official release of their application for Nokia phones. Up until now, users of the popular blogging platform were only able to use the beta version on their Nokia handsets.

However, the application is not yet compatible with Symbian^3 devices such as N8, C6 and C7. Furthermore, this version does not support Symbian S60 v3.1. This is because some features used by the WP App require capabilities that S60 3.1 does not have (such as retrieving GPS location).

Some of the currently supported phones include N97 Mini and X6, as well as all Maemo devices.

Users are advised to upgrade previous versions (0.8.3 or older) on their Nokia phones to the latest 0.8.4 version. The new update adds the following features and fixes:

Usability update: user doesn’t need to input API key anymore to view wordpress.com hosted blog statistics (user has to be administrator of the blog); Bug fix: Splash screen didn’t close if initialization took too long.

As a side note, WordPress for Nokia is more advanced than its iOS counterpart. The latter lacks text formatting and support for WordPress.com stats. However, expect some missing features from the Nokia version too, like the ability to paste text into any of the edit boxes.

It seems that at the moment Qt for Symbian doesn’t support platform-wide 'copy&paste' operations, but Nokia will probably fix it in a future update. Maemo, MeeGo and desktop builds are working fine with the 'copy&paste' function.

Besides WordPress for Nokia, the application is also available for iOS, Blackberry and Android, which only leaves the company to start working on Windows Phone 7 and Palm versions, if any are planned, of course.

WordPress for Nokia is available as a free download from the Ovi Store, but users might want to get it directly from the developer's blog, where updates are posted more quickly. Also, expect Symbian^3 support in a matter of days.
