Microsoft has increasingly been pushing its own Open XML format and standard as a superior alternative to ODF. In this context, the fact the Microsoft has announced the adoption of the OpenDocument Format alongside its integration into the Microsoft Office Suite, represents yet another customer driven compromise from the Redmond Company.

By the end of this month, more specifically on October 23, Microsoft is scheduled to release the OpenDocument Format plug-in that will initially only permit the opening of ODF formats. The US software giant revealed that the plug-in's functionality would be expanded at a later date with the addition of ODF Save capabilities.

For the "Save to ODF" Word add-on, Microsoft went to its partners: France-based Clever Age, Aztecsoft in India and Dialogika in Germany.
