We’ve been told so many times that jeans will never go out of fashion and, most importantly, we’ve seen so many examples of that, that the impulse to want to hold on to our old denims is only getting stronger by the day. According to a recent survey, cited by the Daily Mail, this is precisely what an estimated two million women in the UK do, with some of them even keeping their old jeans in their wardrobe for up to 40 years.

Once women no longer fit into their jeans, they don’t just throw them away like a man would, the survey has learned. The pants are, instead, folded nicely and deposited safely into a corner of the closet specifically assigned for this purpose, from where they’re only occasionally taken out to verify if any weight has been lost or not. This is not only because most of us believe that jeans will never truly go out of style, but also because we consider that pair “the one,” so to speak.

“A study has revealed that up to two million of us hold on to our favorite pair of denims for up to 40 years. Many believe that, whatever the style, their strides will eventually come back in fashion – even if that means waiting decades and shedding a fair few pounds.” the Mail writes on the survey performed on 1,000 customers of the Lakeside Shopping Centre in Essex. Thus, the average age of a pair of jeans in the UK is of six years, with women holding on to them for much longer than men do.

“Almost half of all adults believe jeans will never go out of fashion. Three in ten women but only 12 per cent of men keep old pairs in the hope they will be able to lose enough weight to get back into them. Around 46 per cent of men have a pair of old jeans that they wear for messy jobs such as painting and decorating. More than one in five (22 per cent) have a much simpler reason for keeping their old jeans – they are the most comfortable item of clothing they own.” the same publication further says.

Moreover, an estimated eight percent of those queried admitted they still had years-old jeans for “sentimental reasons.” All of the above figures seem to total up to £7 billion worth of jeans, both discarded for the lung-run and in use.
