A woman has broken a record for fastest swimmer on the portion between Lanai and Maui. One or two sharks emerged alongside her during the swim.
Meredith Novack is a marathon swimmer who has taken home a record for crossing a section of the Auau Channel in a round-trip of 11 hours and 1 minute.
Her record attempt on Sunday required her to swim for 20 miles (32 km). According to Grind TV, she never even noticed the tiger sharks.
Either a shark popped up two times during the return trip, or two sharks were spotted. A member of Novack's support team, Jenn Noonkester, was kayaking next to her at the time.
The kayak has a device meant to repel sharks, but she had to alert the rest of the crew in a fishing boat beside her.
Another member jumped onto the kayak and switched sides with her, zapping the shark which has been spotted last with the Shark Shield.
