Wolfenstein: The New Order might not be universally loved by reviewers or by fans, but the new first-person shooter from developer Machine Games and publisher Bethesda has managed to take the number one position in the United Kingdom video game chart during its launch week.

The title allows players to explore an alternate reality where Nazi Germany won World War II using advanced tech and once more step into the combat boots of B.J. Blazkowicz as he tries to end their world domination using a large array of powerful weapons.

Wolfenstein: The New Order is offered on the PC, the PlayStation 4 from Sony, the Xbox One from Microsoft and current-gen consoles.

The title is single-player only, which might be a problem for its long-term sales prospects, but the team at UKIE putting together the UK chart says that it was the second biggest launch of the current year.

Minecraft for the PlayStation 3 has managed to climb up one position in order to reach second place in the top ten, showing that the indie sensation is very popular even years after launch and even with a console audience.

The team at Mojang has said that it will deliver more content packs and updates for the title on all platforms on which it is available.

FIFA 14, the already old football simulation from EA Sports, has lost its number one, but has settled nicely into the last position of the United Kingdom podium.

Titanfall is also down two positions in order to reach fourth as the enthusiasm generated by the launch of its first downloadable content pack, Expedition, is starting to dissipate, even if developers at Respawn Entertainment are delivering more updates for the shooter on all platforms.

The FIFA series has managed to get another title in the top ten with the 2014 FIFA World Cup themed experience, which sits in fifth, while Call of Duty: Ghosts, from Infinity Ward and Activision, is in sixth.

The Xbox 360 version of Minecraft continues to perform well in seventh place and is followed by The Amazing Spider-Man 2, from Beenox and Activision, which seems to sell well even as the movie on which it is based is exiting cinemas.

Battlefield 4, the first-person shooter from DICE and Electronic Arts, is in ninth place and The LEGO Movie Video Game, from Warner Bros. Interactive, closes down the United Kingdom top ten.
