14 DAY TRIAL // Some say that all sound is music, and with the Ototo, you can give credence to that statement because it will make music whenever something happens that doesn't naturally produce such sounds.
Ototo is essentially an all-in-one musical invention kit that lets you make a musical instrument out of anything, animate or inanimate. Well, more or less.
The Ototo has its own keys, so you could say it is a musical instrument in itself. Nonetheless, that is a very small part of its purpose and capabilities.
The device has 12 onboard touch sensitive inputs, and a bunch of sensors (rotation, light, slider, touch strip, force, breath, joystick) that can be linked to 4 sensor inputs.
Each sensor input controls the different elements of sound, one for pitch, one for loudness, and two that control the sound texture.
The sensors are meant to be connectors to conductive materials or objects. Crocodile clips can be used to link an item to one of the keys, allowing you to trigger that note on your object.
So you could, say, link the Ototo to cups, or make a sound that reacts to your breath, every time maintaining direct control over the loudness, texture, pitch, timber, etc. And no coding or computer knowhow is needed for any of it.
Of course, the sensors and keys don't just miraculously produce music on their own. The Ototo uses a synthesizer and a sampler for that.
There is some integrated flash memory too (128 Mbits), holding samples of various instruments, like drums and you can cycle through them by pressing the buttons.
Other things include a speaker (obviously), a 3.5mm headphone output, two AA batteries, micro USB. Everything works on the energy provided via a 5V analog input.
All in all, Ototo has everything it needs to help you turn everything you own, from your cardboard box to your flower pots, into musical instruments.
