Is it a real issue?

Can Voice Over IP calls be listened to by malicious users? Well, while using the basic "It's on the Net so it can be hacked" mentality, the answers is "Yes", at least for now. Phishing by phone has not been considered a real issue till now, because talking on the phone costs money, while e-mailing is free. Also, e-mail spam-scam campaigns are somewhat controlled by bots, while in a telephone scam campaign you would actually need real people, fact which is a far more complicated.

In any case, VOIP is being deployed in more and more firms, so I guess security measures should be strengthened now, before it's too late. What I'm actually saying here, is that there haven't been too many news items concerning VOIP hacks, probably because it's not as used as other communication methods on the Web are.

One good idea would be encryption, but in my opinion, a lot of people have poor Internet connections, so encrypting and decrypting the data might cause a bit of a lag while talking to the person at the other end of the line. But, I'd rather have a laggy conversation than an insecure one, that's for sure!

For those of you that are wondering what could possibly happen to them if their conversation got hacked - well, let's just consider the possibilities: for one thing, there would be a data leak, and other people could get their hands on sensitive info about your firm! Another thing is that they could intercept a conversation between you and your bank, and this is a pretty severe case, at one moment, the hacker could close the bank's connection to you and simply intervene saying that he has been issued to assist you and then he just asks you for your PIN or stuff like that. And these are just a few possibilities! If you want to read more on this, you can follow this link.
