It appears that even though things are still uncertain on the overall IT market, some companies are, nonetheless, managing to see some improvement on the financial level, as Wintek and Powerchip can attest.

One can definitely say that the past quarter, perhaps the whole first half of the year (2011) is one full of ironies.

For instance, Advanced Micro Devices ended up entering its seventh month of not having a CEO, even as its situation improved thanks to projects dating before Dirk Meyer's departure.

Now, Digitimes reports yet another situation that can be considered ironic, once again in regards to the finances of one or more companies.

More specifically, Wintek and Powerchip Technology have both been found to have risen in revenues during the month of June.

The irony is not so much related to the former, since, as a maker of touch panels, it rode the ascending wave of touchscreen sales buoyed by the tablet and notebook markets.

For those that want numbers, the revenue increase was of 5.28%, leading to the sum of NT$7.653 billion, which corresponds to the sum of US$264 million. Overall, this led to first half of 2011 revenues of NT$43.111 billion (up 108.43% on year).

No, the irony lies with Powerchip technology which, though reliant on PC DRAM, succeeded in progressing even despite how average selling prices have been in the lows for a while.

The 40nm node technology was the main factor behind this outcome, though it is more than likely that the LCD driver ICs, CMOS sensors and power management ICs at least contributed to the result, if not offset whatever downwards trend the DRAM part may have followed.

Overall, June revenues were of NT$4.18 billion (US$145 million), enabling January-June figures of NT$23.21 billion. Alas, while the monthly rise was of 3%, the first half of the eyar showed a drop of 45.4%.
