On March 21, Alexandre Julliard announced a new development version of the Wine app, featuring a small number of changes and support for more games and applications.

The number of new additions and bug fixes in the development version of Wine (Wine Is Not an Emulator) is just as large as any of the previous release, but is not as exciting. It doesn't has any sensational features, with the exception of fixes for various applications and games.

Wine may have lost a little from its users in the past year, after the rise of Steam for Linux and after a large number of games received native ports, but there are still many Windows applications that users need to run under Linux OSes.

The most important new features in Wine 1.7.15 are: a new Task Scheduler service, many regression test fixes, support for exception unwinding in VBScript, and smaller bug fixes. As you can see, the Task Scheduler service has received a lot of attention in the past couple of edition and the developers are still improving it.

Wine 1.7.15 also brings bug fixes for the following Windows games and tools: Timeless Time, Expense 3.0, Visual Pinball, Seagate Crystal Reports 6, F1 2000, F1 Championship Season 2000, Songbird 1.4.3, Tic Tac Toe, Google SketchUp 8, Symantec VIP Access, SolidWorks Explorer 2012, CorelDRAW 12, iTunes 7, 3DMark06, Roller Coaster Tycoon 2, LabChart Reader 8, Samsung Magician, Sid Meier's Ace Patrol, and Mortal Online (MMORPG) client.

According to the changelog, Seagate Crystal Reports 6 installer no longer crashes due to incorrect ordinal numbering of 'odbccp32.dll' exports, F1 2000 and F1 Championship Season 2000 no longer crash at startup, Drakensang Dark Eye no longer crash on start, an infinite loop in mshtml navigation has been fixed, and a number of applications and games no longer need the wmvcore.dll.WMCreateProfileManager.

Wine (stands for wine is not an emulator), can be usually found in every major repository, but usually only the stable version. You can easily install the development version of Wine with the help of a PPA. All you need to do it to open a terminal and enter the following commands (you will need to be root in order to work).

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install wine

More details about this release can be found in the official changelog. Download Wine 1.7.14 right now from Softpedia.

Remember that this is a development release and it should NOT be installed on production machines. It is intended to be used for testing purposes only.
