Back in January 2008, then full time Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates joined Michael Dell, founder and Chairman of Dell, and U2 lead Bono in order to debut a new edition of Windows Vista. Microsoft tweaked its high-end edition of the Windows client and rebranded the SKU under the (PRODUCT) RED initiative designed to fight AIDS in Africa. However, at that time, Vista (RED) was intimately connected with Dell machines. Now, at the end of 2008, Microsoft is ready to offer a standalone version of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (RED).

“(RED) reflects our values, and is a perfect fit with our belief in the power and potential of the individual. Windows is excited to work with Dell and (RED) to help eliminate AIDS in Africa,” reads a message from the official (RED) hotspot destined for Vista's last edition to hit the market.

“Dell (PRODUCT)RED PCs with Windows Vista Ultimate (PRODUCT)RED are designed to make a difference. Because they're (RED), choosing one makes a powerful impact on the future of people living with AIDS in Africa.”

Windows Vista SP1 Ultimate (RED) will start being available for purchase on December 15, 2008, according to Amazon.com (via Long Zheng). The latest Vista SKU comes to the table with a price tag of no less than $219.95. However, an upgrade will cost students just $64.95, via a special Microsoft offering.

“Windows Vista Ultimate has the power, security, and mobility features you need for work and all of the entertainment features you want for fun. It's enhanced with (PRODUCT)RED wallpapers, gadgets, and a unique screen saver and DreamScene,” it is added in the message presenting Vista SP1 Ultimate (RED). “And, if you're a college student looking to make an impact visit TheUltimateSteal where you can download Windows Vista Ultimate (PRODUCT)RED at an exclusive discount price, saving money while still saving lives.”
