It turns out that Microsoft is preparing some major changes in Windows

Windows Threshold, the next major update for the Windows product family expected to land in 2015, will bring several major improvements, including the return of the Start Menu.

According to a report of WinSuperSite, Windows Threshold will also allow users to launch Metro apps in their own windows right on the desktop, a thing that's already possible with ModernMix, an app that's currently available for download for both Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 users.

There are two reasons why Microsoft would basically come down to such a dramatic change in the Modern UI.

First of all, Redmond is struggling to make Metro apps successful and until now, only a few users have actually decided to give them a chance. Most of them are optimized for the touch and run in full screen, which means that you need to completely ignore the desktop environment when using such an app.

With Metro apps running in their own windows on the desktop, Microsoft would basically allow users to launch them just like any other software solution, with the main difference that they would continue to offer touch-optimized features.

Second of all, ModernMix is experiencing quite an impressive success right now, as users who run Metro apps on a regular basis aren't necessarily addicted to the Modern UI. As a result, running them on the desktop pretty much makes sense and would obviously come in handy to many people out there.

Windows Threshold is expected to be released in early 2015, approximately one year after Microsoft officially launches the Windows 8.1 Spring GDR update.

Threshold would also come with a Start Menu which would represent the second major comeback in the Windows product family after the Start button that was officially reimplemented in Windows 8.1 earlier this year.
