A new download from Microsoft is designed to streamline the process of resolving server issues, while working in tandem with Microsoft Customer Service and Support.

Customers can head over to the Microsoft Download Center and grab the Windows Server Solutions Log Collector Tool, which is available free of charge.

According to the software giant, the Windows Server Solutions Log Collector Tool is designed to support three versions of its server platform, namely Windows Home Server 2011, Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials, and Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials.

The utility gets diagnostic logs from the customers’ machines, simplifying troubleshooting work. “The Windows Server Solutions Log Collector obtains data from multiple sources that is used by Microsoft Customer Service and Support to assist you in solving problems that occur with your server and computers that are connected to the network,” the Redmond company reveals.

Not only can IT professionals download the tool for free, but they can also access guidance on using it. Microsoft set up a section on TechNet dedicated to the Windows Server Solutions Log Collector.

Documentation is available on installing running and troubleshooting Windows Server Solutions Log Collector, directly from the software giant.

“When you are troubleshooting computer issues, a representative from Microsoft Customer Service and Support may ask you to gather logs from servers, computers on the network, or both by using the Windows Server Solutions Log Collector,” Microsoft notes.

“The Log Collector copies program logs, event reviewer logs, and related environment information into a single zip file at a specified location. You can run the Log Collector tool directly from the server or any computer on the network, or by using a remote connection to the computers.”

It’s important to underline that the Log Collector is incapable of actually resolving any issues related to servers or computers, or making any modifications on its own. At the same time, network problems fall outside of its scope.
