It's likely that Palm will announce during a press conference, which will take place in San Francisco, the launche of a Treo model designed to work with Windows Mobile 5.0.

The model, called Treo 700, will be backed by Verizon Wireless and will have the same functions as the other Treo models: telephony, e-mail and PDA functions. None of the companies involved commented on the information, but the Palm officials have confirmed that there will be a press conference, which will be participated by Bill Gates.

Palm, which contributed to the handhelds' launching and success, has faced fierce competition from companies like Research-In-Motion and Microsoft. The migration towards Windows Mobile is a strategy which will surely affect Research-In-Motion, the maker of Blackberry devices.

In fact, in an interview published in 2005, right after Windows Mobile 5.0 was launched, Bill Gates admitted that Blackberry is the main competitor; hence, the alliance with Palm should come as no surprise.

Currently, Windows Mobile has a lower market share than Symbian, the platform operating on most smartphones, which is backed by the Finnish producer Nokia.
