Windows Phone, currently the third largest smartphone operating system out there, has started to see stronger growth in various markets around the world, including Europe, where it is nearing a double digit market share.

When the top five European markets are taken into consideration, Windows Phone’s sales share goes to up to 10 percent, though it still falls far behind Android and iOS.

According to a recent report from Kantar, the platform grew to a 10.8 percent market share in the UK, while reaching a 12.9 percent market share in France.

Italy appears to be the leading market for the operating system, since it has a 6 percent market share there, while Germany and Spain are at the other end of the line, with 5.7 and 4.8 percent share, respectively.

The data is based on sales of smartphones in the past three months, showing that Windows Phone remained strong on the market compared to October’s report, despite the fact that Apple launched two new devices in the meantime, namely the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c.

As WMPoweruser notes, the fact that Windows Phone did well during the holiday season also shows that it’s becoming stronger in front of Android and iOS. However, it still has a lot of catching up to do.

Moving forth, we might see sales of Windows Phone devices increasing even more, especially with Nokia bringing to shelves three new smartphones, namely the Lumia 1520, Lumia 1320, and Lumia 525.

On the other hand, we should note that, while Microsoft’s mobile operating system did fare well in Europe, it remained far behind rivals in other markets, including Asian countries and the United States.

Provided that more handsets will be released with the platform on top soon, we might see a change here as well, that’s for sure. Keep an eye on this space for additional info on the matter.
