Glance is one of the top features on Windows Phones, as it allows users to see notifications without actually unlocking the device, and an update released today makes it a lot more helpful for everyone using it.

Glance Screen for Lumia devices received a version bump from 2.3.0.4 to 3.1.0.21, and naturally, this new release comes with quite a lot of improvements in terms of features and functionality.

First and foremost, the new Glance version allows users to disable some of the content displayed on the screen, including date, detailed status and quick status notifications. This is particularly helpful if you'd like to keep the screen organized and see only the notifications that you want, without any other content being shown.

At the same time, this particular release comes with a first in terms of Glance Screen features, allowing users to display live lockscreens and information that comes through them.

At this point, only a couple of apps are supported, namely Weather and Health & Fitness, but more would be added at a later time, as developers discover the new Glance option.

Live lockscreens with Glance

The idea behind a live lockscreen on Glance is as simple as it could be: applications such as Weather can show the detailed weather forecast on the Glance screen, even though this particular feature was designed from the very beginning as an alternative to the classic LED and provides users with a quick peek at notifications.

Of course, this clearly comes in handy to users who are trying to make the most of the Glance Screen, but it also gives developers more choices, especially when it comes to those who are trying to use the phone's lockscreen to display additional information.

After the installation of the new version comes to an end, users need to reboot their phones, so all new features would only show up after the operating system is loaded back.

Available for everyone

The new version appears to be available for everyone right now, obviously supposing your Windows Phone device supports Glance.

This means that those who purchased the flagship wannabe Nokia Lumia 930, which comes with pretty great features but without support for Glance, won't get it.

The Glance update should show up in the Windows Phone Store for everyone in just a few hours, but in case you can't see it already, you could also try downloading the new version manually from the store.
