14 DAY TRIAL // There has been much talk about what’s next for Windows Phone operating system and how Microsoft can tackle the technological advancements that Android has already reached or is about to achieve in a the coming months.
We’re talking about 2K displays, octa-core processors and such. It looks like Microsoft is taking into consideration all these new technologies for its Windows Phone platform, but they will be added in consequential updates that are expected to arrive later this year.
The first rumors on support for 2K resolution and Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processors surfaced last month, when a device running Windows Phone was spotted on GFXBench and it was said to be running those features.
Before that, NokiaPowerUser blog site reported that the next Windows Phone devices that would be launched in Q2 2014 might pack Snapdragon 805 processors, 2K resolution displays and “next-gen camera hardware with 20-25 megapixel sensor.”
Well, it appears that the information wasn’t accurate at all, as Nokia has announced three new Windows Phone handsets that will be released in Q2 (Lumia 630, Lumia 635 and Lumia 930) and none support any of the features mentioned by NokiaPowerUser.
However, the cited blog claims that it has now received further information from sources close to the matter, which hints to possible high-end devices packed with 2K resolution displays and Snapdragon 805 processors by the end of 2014.
Rumor has it that Microsoft is testing these features, which are likely to be introduced in GDR2 update for Windows Phone 8.1.
Those unfamiliar with Windows Phone 8.1 updates should know that Microsoft is expected to deliver at least two other major updates for this version of the platform before launching Windows Phone 9.
Both updates are expected to arrive sometime this year and each will add important new features and lots of improvements that did not make it into the final version of Windows Phone 8.1, which, by the way, has yet to be released for the general public.
According to NokiaPowerUser, there’s a slight chance that one or both these improvements (2K resolution and Snapdragon 805 CPU support) will be included in the next GDR1 update for Windows Phone 8.1, but we doubt that will be possible.
It is also worth mentioning that the device spotted in GFXBench with Windows Phone, 2K resolution display and Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 chipset is likely to be a tablet, which means that there’s a high chance that Microsoft will add these new hardware improvements on slates before bringing them to smartphones, though this is just a speculation.
