14 DAY TRIAL // It’s not a new thing that Windows Media Center will be removed in Windows 10, but Microsoft knows that some features of this Windows add-on are critical for its users, so the company is looking into ways to address this problem when the new operating system becomes available.
The company says that since DVD playback is one of the most used features of Windows Media Center, a free app offering such capabilities would be integrated in Windows 10.
“Windows Media Center is not part of Windows 10 and won’t be available after upgrading to Windows 10. If you use Windows Media Center, we will alert you during upgrade that Windows Media Center is not available on Windows 10. We know that some users use Windows Media Center to play DVDs, and we are providing a free DVD playback app in Windows 10 for Windows Media Center users,” Redmond explains.
Removed because of low usage
Windows Media Center development will be abandoned because only few people are still using it, and Microsoft says that it makes no sense to continue investing in an add-on that only registers small success.
“We are excited to bring many compelling new features for our customers this summer including Cortana and Microsoft Edge with a free upgrade offer to Windows 10. We can confirm that due to decreased usage, Windows Media Center will not be part of Windows 10,” the company told us in a statement last month.
Media Center was previously available as a stand-alone Windows SKU, and many Windows 7 users were running it on their PCs in order to bring Windows in their living room, while Windows 8 only got an add-on that could be downloaded and purchased separately.
Windows 10 will be offered as a free upgrade for computers running Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, so it’s expected that many users, including those who are using Windows Media Center, will take advantage of this offer and install the new operating system on their PCs.
