Windows Embedded Enterprise v.Next to Launch 3 Months after Windows 8 GA

But there’s no telling just when the release will happen

The next version of Windows Embedded Enterprise will reach commercial availability within three months after Windows 8 ships to consumers worldwide.

Of course, Microsoft is not saying when exactly this will happen, especially since it doesn’t want to make the Windows 8 general availability date public just yet.

Still, the company confirmed officially that Windows Embedded Enterprise v.Next’s launch is planned a quarter after Windows 8 GA.

The promise from the software giant is that Windows Embedded Enterprise v.Next will bring to the table full Windows application compatibility.

In addition, Microsoft is building the next generation of Windows Embedded Enterprise to deliver all the power of its premium platforms for embedded devices.

According to the software giant, Windows Embedded Enterprise v.Next will power a range of devices, including ATMs and kiosks.

“Windows 8 represents the potential to reimagine not only the PC experience, but also the specialized device experience,” revealed Kevin Dallas, general manager of Windows Embedded.

“Our road map builds on Windows Embedded’s history of aligning the platform with Windows to support an integrated experience across devices, phones, PCs and the cloud.”

Dallas unveiled Microsoft’s roadmap for Windows Embedded, and shared details on next generation embedded operating systems such as Windows Embedded Standard v.Next and Windows Embedded Compact v.Next.

Microsoft is stressing that upcoming Windows Embedded OS releases will be designed to align tightly not just with Windows 8, but also with the new experiences that the successor of Windows 7 will make possible.

At the same time, additional Windows Embedded offerings beyond those mentioned in this article will also evolve in the next years.

“Also, if you’re thinking about the future of Windows Embedded Handheld, Windows Embedded POSReady and Windows Embedded Automotive, and our entire portfolio of products, know that we are investing in these to include the latest Microsoft technologies as well,” Dallas added.
