Microsoft will introduce Windows 8 on October 25 in New York and Steve Ballmer says that it marks the beginning of a new era for the entire company.

In a letter sent to shareholders, Ballmer said that the Redmond-based technology firm expects to develop as a devices and service company without neglecting the software market at all.

“It truly is a new era at Microsoft — an era of incredible opportunity for us, for the 8 million developers building apps for our devices, for the more than 640,000 partners worldwide and, most important, for the people and businesses using our products to reach their full potential,” Ballmer said in the letter.

The CEO praised the upcoming operating system and said that it’s a perfect connection between the traditional desktop PC and a tablet device.

It is beautiful, functional and perfect for personal and professional use, said Ballmer emphasizing that the new OS comprises plenty of new technologies aimed at all user categories.

That’s why Windows 8 is such a successful product even before its official debut. “Our products are generating excitement,” Ballmer explained, suggesting that both the Surface and Windows 8 are very likely to be major hits after October 26.

“We see an unprecedented amount of opportunity for both this year and the long term. And when I pause to reflect on how far we've come over the past few years and how much further we'll go in the next one, I couldn't be more excited and optimistic,” Ballmer concluded.
