Windows 8 devices, be they tablets, mobile phones or computers, are already on display at retailers around the world, but in order to demonstrate this new OS’ features, Microsoft came down to a brand new marketing strategy.

The Redmond-based technology company created a fictional character called “Allison Brown” to show some of the Windows 8 goodies at work, including the built-in Modern Apps.

This means that those of you who’ll spend a few minutes in front of a store staring at a Windows 8 computer will have the chance to see Allison’s photos, emails, videos and other personal information.

The Wall Street Journal writes that Microsoft has adopted a similar strategy in all markets across the globe, so German users for example do not get an “Allison Brown,” but a “Franziska Fiegler.”

The idea is basically the same in every case: Microsoft needed a user account created on every device showcased at global retailers, in order to demonstrate some of the features available in Windows 8.

In some cases, these names may actually be real, but Microsoft cannot be accused of anything. Its only purpose was to get more personal and show people that Windows 8 can handle basically any task for each user out there, regardless of their country.

Windows 8 will officially hit the shelves on Friday and will be aimed not only at the traditional desktop computer market, but also at tablet users and mobile phone owners.

Microsoft’s Surface tablet, for example, comes with a special version of Windows 8 called Windows RT, but this one doesn’t run x86 and x64 apps.
