Last week, Microsoft made available for download the Consumer Preview flavor of its Windows 8 operating system.

Millions of people all around the world have already downloaded and installed it on their PCs at home or at work, - the first million downloads was topped in the first 24 hours – including Windows Phone developers, who are getting ready for the next mobile OS release.

However, it appears that some of them bumped into issues when trying to run Windows Phone SDK on Windows 8 Consumer Preview.

Given the fact that the latest Windows 8 flavor is only a pre-release, there are a series of incompatibility issues that emerge when trying to install specific applications.

One of these issues is related to the Windows Phone SDK on the Windows 8 Consumer Preview, though Microsoft notes that they are aware of it and that they are working on resolving the problem.

The main problems that people will encounter when trying to run Windows Phone SDK on Windows 8 include: XNA Game Studio. On an attempt at installing the Windows Phone SDK, the user will receive error messages with regard to components of the XNA tool chain. These components will fail to install on Windows 8; the workaround for this has been blogged about by Aaron Stebner.

Windows Phone Emulator. Windows 8 cannot currently run the Windows Phone emulator, which will make it very difficult to debug your code. There are two issues in addition to the simple fact that the emulator does not run on Windows 8, having to do with specific emulator functionality.

.NET 3.5. Capability.exe and slsvcutil.exe will not run on Win 8 unless you separately install .NET 3.5.

Additionally, there are some issues with the Visual Studio “11” Developer Preview that will emerge when trying to get the Windows Phone SDK up and running.

For the time being, Visual Studio “11” Developer Preview does not come with support for building applications for mobile phones.

However, such capabilities will be included in the next version of Visual Studio by the time it RTMs, Microsoft announced. The Redmond-based software giant also confirmed that it planned on enabling the use of Windows Phone SDK 7.1 on Windows 8 in the coming months.
