Microsoft says it’s working to make downgrades possible

Windows 10 for phones preview is expected to launch sometime these days, at least according to Microsoft’s previous statements, so if you launch the Windows Insider app every few minutes looking for a downloadable build, you’re not alone.

In the meantime, new information on this preview build emerges on a regular basis, and some fresh details offered by the Windows Insider boss allow us to have a glimpse into how the upcoming technical preview build is going to work.

Gabriel Aul says in a tweet that Windows 10 for phones preview might support rollbacks, which means that, if you come across a bug or issue that makes your device unusable, you can always downgrade to the previous version of the operating system that’s supposed to be more stable and reliable.

You could also go back to Windows Phone 8.1

Aul hasn’t provided too many details on how downgrading would work, but users might also be allowed to go back from the Windows 10 for phones preview to Windows Phone 8.1 in case something goes wrong.

This would indeed be very useful for users who aren’t really satisfied with the new operating system, but keep in mind that this feature is still in development right now, so a slightly different behavior that would only allow downgrading to a previous Windows 10 release is also possible.

Interestingly, downgrading wasn’t supported on the Windows 10 version of PCs, so users who installed the technical preview had no other option than to perform a clean install of their previous Windows copy if they wanted to go back.

Instructions in this regard are also published on Microsoft’s Windows Insider page:

“If you want to go back to your previous operating system you'll need to reinstall your version of Windows from the recovery or installation media that came with your PC (typically DVD media).”

Windows 10 for phones preview is expected to launch either this weekend or next week, so keep an eye on the Windows Insider app to make sure that you get it as soon as it becomes available.
