Video game publisher and hardware developer Microsoft has announced that it has launched a new Xbox Live Rewards-based trivia game that allows interested gamers to get free Microsoft Points by answering some pretty simple questions about games.

The trivia game will continue until May 15 and all one has to do to play is go to the official Xbox Live Rewards program and register for a free account.

There are instant prizes that are offered each day of the trivia game, going up to 1,000 Microsoft Points, which is a little over 12 dollars, with weekly prizes coming in at 4,000 points while the grand prize given out on May 15 valued at 10,000 MS Points.

The trivia game takes into account the fact that modern gamers have the resources of the Internet at their finger tips, rating them not only when giving out correct answers but also taking into account the amount of time required to come up with it.

The questions seem to be mostly linked to games that have been important for the Xbox 360 as a platform, with a lot of them related to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the Halo series and Fable.

The Rewards concept for Xbox Live has been launched late in 2010, after undergoing beta testing for about one full year.

The idea is to give Xbox Live Gold subscribers Microsoft Points as long as they perform certain actions like renewing a membership, taking some surveys, buying content and activating third party services like Netflix.

Sony had been beta testing a similar concept linked to the PlayStation Network for the PS3, but it has recently announced that the program was canceled because it was not suited to the realities of the current market.

As the commercial fight between the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 becomes ever closer, small initiatives like Rewards and trivia games might make a big difference.
