Willow Smith, the 9-year-old daughter of A-listers Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, is the latest music sensation on the pop scene: she has a first single out and an extraordinary video to promote it.

The video for Willow’s “Whip My Hair” premiered this Monday and features the young singer turning a boring all-white room into a kaleidoscope of colors, using her hair as a magical paintbrush.

Speaking with MTV News, Willow says the message behind both song and video is that you should be yourself at all times and not let those who criticize you bring you down.

She also admits she had a lot of help shooting the video from her best friends, the Warriorettes, and that working on a video can be exhausting at times.

“Having my Warriorettes there, my best friends caring – Jade, Angel Punky, they’re just all my best friends – and my family there just made it even better,” Willow tells MTV.

Shooting for the video was a lot of fun, even a bit trying at first, she says. However, if you’re committed to doing something, the long hours almost seem not to matter anymore.

“Me and my friends were touching the oranges, ‘cause they were, like, real oranges but they were spray-painted,” she says of the shoot. “It was gooey,” Willow adds with a grimace.

“It was a long day... It was hard sometimes, but, like, if you have a commitment to that, you have to stick with it,” the singer explains. Then, for more clarification, she continues:

“And it’s not because I have to, it’s because I want it. Most people, if they don’t want it, they’ll just be like, ‘Oh well, I can do that tomorrow’ – is that what’s called procrastinating?”

As for the message of the song, that’s a very simple and direct one, Willow explains.

“‘Whip My Hair’ means don’t be afraid to be yourself, and don’t let anybody tell you that that’s wrong. Because the best thing is you,” the 9-year-old pop star says.

Below is the extremely colorful and fun video for Willow Smith’s debut single “Whip My Hair.” It’s bound to become a hit, industry watchers believe.
