About three weeks ago, on August 6, a female Patagonian Mara living at the Cotswald Wildlife Park in the United Kingdom delivered a set of twins.

The little rodents are incredibly shy and won't sit still for more than a few seconds at a time, which is why keepers are having some trouble taking pictures of them.

Zoo Borns tells us that, according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Patagonian Mara need be considered an “near threatened” species.

This means that, although they don't risk going extinct anytime soon, these rodents have experienced a noteworthy decline in their population.

This happened because people have converted large portions of their natural habitat in Patagonia into agricultural lands, the same source details.

Overhunting has also contributed to the fact that Patagonian Mara have made it on the IUCN's list of threatened species.
