The sales experienced by the Nintendo Wii U were slower than expected, according to GameStop president Tony Bartel, but the executive hopes that, once more games are released for the console, the device will pick up speed.

The Wii U came out in November of last year and, while it sold quite a few units, including the higher-priced premium versions, it seems that retailers like GameStop had bigger expectations of the new home console.

"Following the holiday launch period, sales have been slower than we expected," GameStop president Tony Bartel told Forbes.

"Nintendo plans on launching some of their biggest IP over the next few months which we think will increase gamer interest."

Bartel also confirmed that more big games should appear for the Wii U, as already Sony has a hefty lineup of exclusive titles set to appear for its next-generation PlayStation 4.
