Parties involved with development stated that it's a sequel, not a porting of the old Sega Saturn title

NiGHTS into Dreams..., aka simply NiGHTS or NiD, is a video game released by Sega in 1996 for the Sega Saturn video game system. The game's story is quite simple, revolving around two children entering a dream world in order to prevent the real world from being taken over. The kids travel alongside the eponymous being called NiGHTS (an androgynous flying acrobat), for additional support in their journey.

Recent rumors said that NiGHTS would be ported to the Wii. As much a reality as it's become, it certainly won't be the Sega Saturn version ported onto Nintendo's Wii. Both companies involved with the development have announced clearly that NiGHTS for the Wii is different. It won't be a port of Sega Saturn's 1996 title for sure. The rumor began when pictures published on Nintendo's official periodical Official Nintendo Magazine immersed, showing what seemed to be the acrobatic protagonist of NiGHTS surrounded by stars in the pitch black sky, with the message "World Exclusive." That's more than enough to create a rumor.

Live Nintendo says that statements coming from parties involved with the game confirmed that, instead of being a mere porting of the 1996 Sega Saturn title, the game (yet to be fully titled) will amplify the franchise making it its official sequel. Further more, "fans of the now original NiGHTS game shouldn't dismiss the probability of seeing our jester attired friend from appearing in 32-bit format as part of Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console marketplace." So then, it's all true and happening. All the developers have to confirm is a release date.
