PlayStation has it, XBOX has it, even the tiny iPod can do it. What's it take to play a DVD on Nintendo's Wii? Mainly ?19.99, a Wii a computer and a DVD Video. Not too expensive requirements if you already have the Wii and the computer. A DVD Video is not the Holy Grail so this should not be too much of a problem. To cut to the chase, all you need is the money to buy the appropriate software.

X-OOM Software has launched X-OOM Movies on Wii. According to the publisher, the software does not require too much effort from the end-user as running the DVD on the computer and saving the file using 'Movies on Wii' to the appropriate format is almost all you have to do. The finishing touch is running the movie on a Wii console from an SD memory card.

The bad news is that we could not get our hands on a copy of the application in order to properly test its efficiency as we could not find it anywhere, neither on the publisher's website, nor on Amazon.

According to the press release, the system specs for running the software are quite minimum: Windows 2000, XP or Vista are the only ones supporting the app, a 700MHz CPU accompanied by 256MB of RAM should do the job quite well. Also, a screen resolution of 1024x768 and about 10GB of hard disk space are required to do a proper job. Don't fret about the disk space as it is only for temporary files.

The application can be run in two modes, and the advanced one (Expert Mode) allows you cutting and backing up individual scenes as well as whole movies. From the description in the press release, movies on Wii sounds pretty bendy, but we still have to see it to believe it.

So, Nintendo lovers, extend the capabilities of the Wii by doing more than playing from the distance. Between a tennis game, sit back and relax watching a TV show or a movie, and who knows, maybe you'll learn a new killer swing.
