Sony appears to be planning a cheaper Xperia Z Ultra version

The Sony Xperia Z Ultra is a 6.44-inch phablet, but due to its oversized screen (for a smartphones that is) some users might be comfortable using it as a small tablet instead.

Sony is apparently taking this scenario into consideration, so it has listed two new models of the devices on its website, indicating an immanent launch.

The first one, called SGP412 is the Wi-Fi only version of the Xperia Z Ultra, so expect it to arrive on the market with a friendlier price tag and relatively unchanged specs.

Earlier speculations seemed to indicate Sony will be switching the MSM8974 Snapdragon 800 from the original phone with an MSM8074 (an 800 version without cellular connectivity) in the new “tablet edition.”

The second model, dubbed the SOL24 is a carrier model for a Japanese network. Apparently, the device appeared briefly for pre-order on Rakuten before being pulled off abruptly. Even so, I expect these two models will make their way into the wild soon enough. Maybe at MWC 2014?
